This week in Biomedical Science, two labs were performed. Blood typing and blood spatter analysis.
In the blood typing lab, students explored how antigens and antibodies interact in the human body, and how these interactions can be used to determine a person’s blood type. By mixing simulated blood samples with anti-A and anti-B serums, they observed reactions and used their results to identify blood types. Understanding this process is not just about memorizing blood groups, but gives them the foundational skill that helps students match blood found at a crime scene to possible suspects or victims.
Students also conducted a blood spatter analysis to study how blood behaves under different conditions. They experimented with how the height, angle, and force of impact influence the size and shape of blood droplets. By analyzing the resulting patterns, students learned how to determine the direction of blood travel, the possible position of the victim, and even the nature of the weapon used.
