NOTES FROM THE NURSE

MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION AT SCHOOL

According to Indiana State Law and school policy, NO MEDICATION will be given to students without compliance with the following:

  1. NO medication will be allowed to be transported to or from school by students.  The student's parent/guardian or an individual who is at least 18 years old and is designated in writing by the student's parent is responsible for bringing the medication to school.
  2. No medication (prescription or over-the-counter) shall be given to a student without the written authorization by the physician and/or parent of the child.
  3. All medication prescribed for the individual child should be kept in the original (and most recent) container bearing the original pharmacy label and the child's name.
  4. Middle and High School students may use cough drops without a parent note.
  5. ALL presciption medicine, including blood glucose test by finger prick, to be administered to a student must be accompanied by a pharmacy label.
  6. Unused medication may only be sent home through the student's parent or an individual who is at least 18 years old and is designated in writing by the student's parent to receive the medication.  After the school year has ended, all medication will be destroyed if not picked up.
  7. In the case of asthmatics who need to carry their own inhalers:  It is extremely important that a copy of the prescription and /or doctor's note be left in the nurse's office that includes the following:  current date, name on medication, dosage, time of administration, and any other specific or special directions, parent stated permission for the child to carry the inhaler and his/her ability to self-medicate.
  8. Any time during the school year:  Please notify the school nurse if your child has seen the physician and has had any change in medications.

ABSENCES FROM SCHOOL

  1. If your child is out of school due to illness, we would appreciate receiving a phone call regarding the nature of their illness.  In this way, we will best be able to keep track of communicable diseases in progress.
  2. If your child is prescribed antibiotics, he/she should be on 48 hours (or as directed) before returning to school.  This makes sure he/she is non-contagious.
  3. Have your child free of fever (over 100.6 must be sent home) for 24 hours before returning to school.  This will help him/her from spreading the illness and from catching others.

UP-DATING IMMUNIZATIONS

Please contact the school nurse with regard to any updated and/or additional immunizations that your child may receive during the school year.  This information will be added to their health record.
